I have a very complex relationship with Will Ferrell. I love the guy, love his sense of humor and just an expression change on his face can crack me up. But many of his movies don’t really work for me. The one constant though is even in the bad films Will is still funny. Anchorman has become a cult classic with an often quoted screenplay and a huge following. Now almost 10 years after that film Ron Burgundy and his news team return for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
After being fired when his wife Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) is promoted to prime time anchor, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) takes the graveyard shift on the newly formed GNN, the world’s first 24 hour news channel. Once again finding success, Ron finds he may also be in danger of losing his wife and son all in the name of news.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is not a radical change of direction. It is more of the same, much more, and although even more ludicrous than the original, it may also be funnier. Ferrell and the rest of the team take the world of Ron Burgundy to just insanely ridiculous heights and man does it work. If it’s not a flat out sight gag or a way too off color joke, it is just the looks on the faces of Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and the rest of the cast. And pairing up Carell with Kristin Wiig as an equally clueless love interest is just a stroke of genius. And of course we get the usual cast of impressive cameos including Harrison Ford, Will Smith, Vince Vaughn, and many more.
The Blu-ray from Paramount Home Video is exceptionally good, especially for a comedy. Bold colors compliment a crystal clear and nicely detailed picture. And with the Blu-ray you get not only the theatrical version of the film but an unrated extended version and a super long super-sized R-rated version with an unprecedented 763 new jokes. Yes you read that right. You will certainly get your money’s worth with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
