Marvel has been making movie history over the past few years by successfully creating their own multi title universe that even ties into a TV series and so far every single entry they have attempted has been a hit. Starting with Iron Man in 2008 they have managed to tell the stories of a whole host of Marvel comic characters that cross over into each other stories and even come together every once in a while for a gargantuan film like The Avengers or next year’s Captain America: Civil War. But in 2014 they strayed from their stable of well-known heroes like The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and Thor to release a movie about a band of misfits called The Guardians of the Galaxy. The film was a huge hit and proved that even when using little known and odd characters, Marvel could still get the job done. This year they proved it once again with Ant-Man, out now on Blu-ray and DVD.
Con man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) has just got out of jail and is committed to a clean life. But when he finds it difficult to keep a regular job to provide support for his daughter, Scott turns back to crime with a daring heist. During the robbery he discovers a strange suit that is capable of shrinking the wearer to the size of an insect. The owner of the suit, scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) mentors Scott to harness the suit’s abilities to stop Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), Pym’s former protégé, from using the technology to create a weapon for the military. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
Like Guardians of the Galaxy before it, a large part of the charm of Ant-Man is that we don’t know the character yet. Ant-Man feels fresh, exciting and refreshing. Rudd brings a fantastic sense of humor to the role with some of the greatest one-liners since the 1980s and the shrinking effects and action scenes are unbelievably fun and exciting. The entire cast is brilliant here including Rudd, Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannvale, T.I., the hilarious Michael Peña and great cameos by Haley Atwell and Anthony Mackie. Ant-Man is a fantastic addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I am sure we will see a sequel sometime in the future but in the meantime Rudd has been confirmed to be reprising the role in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. I for one will take all of Ant-Man that I can get. Highly recommended.
