Anton Yelchin is one of the new young breed of actors that are really catching the attention of Hollywood and audiences alike. The first roles that really got him noticed were in Alpha Dog in 2006 and Charlie Barlett in 2007. But in 2009 his star took off when he starred as the classic character Chekov in J.J. Abram’s reboot of Star Trek. Since then he has starred in an eclectic mix of big movies like the Fright Night remake, Terminator Salvation, and the Star Trek sequel as well as smaller indie fare like Only Lover’s Left Alive, Odd Thomas and Dying of the Light with Nicholas Cage. Yelchin seems to have a soft spot for the horror genre with a few of these entries and another one is out now, Burying the Ex, and is a great return to form for veteran director Joe Dante.
Max (Yelchin) thinks he has the perfect relationship with girlfriend Evelyn (Ashley Greene). That is until she moves in with him and he discovers she is actually obsessively controlling and manipulative. When fate intervenes and Evelyn is killed in a freak accident, Max moves on and meets his dream girl, Olivia (Alexandra Daddario). But their budding new romance faces the ultimate challenge when Evelyn comes back from the dead to resume their relationship and preserve their love for eternity.
Burying the Ex is a flat out blast. Great direction from Joe Dante in his best movie since his Masters of Horror work 10 years ago, Yelchin is charismatic and hilarious as Max and has great chemistry with Daddario, and Greene shows another side of her acting abilities with a really funny performance that borders on slapstick. The romance scenes are sweet, the horror elements true to the genre, the humor effective and well placed and the look of the film embraces the indie vibe. Burying the Ex is a welcome addition to the horror comedy genre and a great movie night choice for having friends over. Definitely recommended.
