Marvel has been cranking out some of the finest action fantasy films of the past decade and are really becoming a force to be reckoned with. With their brilliant marketing, filmmaking, interconnectivity between their comics, movies and TV shows and their knack for perfect casting, they seem to be getting better with each new movie. After the success of The Avengers it was unclear whether they would be able to top such a hit but they did so this year with Captain America: The Winter Soldier then again with Guardians of the Galaxy. With their slate announced for the next few years, it will be very interesting to see where they go from here.
Since we last saw Captain America (Chris Evans) he was going to join S.H.I.E.L.D. after the Battle of New York. Now two years later, he is leading a team of operatives including Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) trying to maintain peace and order in the world. But when a mysterious new for named The Winter Soldier appears, Cap, Widow and new friend Falcon (Anthony Mackie) find themselves on the run from their own organization trying to uncover secrets that have been buried for decades.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of those rare films that defies expectations and becomes something more than it was meant to be. There is an underlying political thriller buried within the superhero movie surface story here with many critics and fans likening the story to that of films like All the Presidents Men and other classic political dramas. Indeed there are many political themes here and many moral themes as well. It looks at the state of our real world, the power of government, the subject of privacy and surveillance, but also the classic themes of heroism and patriotism. Chris Evans is wonderful in this role imbuing his character with all the traits we would expect from such a hero, while still maintaining a humanity about him and his ability to doubt and question the world around him. On top of all this you also get some of the best action yet filmed for a Marvel movie including a phenomenal car chase and an unbelievable opening scene aboard a ship. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is in my top five movies of the year and is essential viewing for any movie fan.
