You have to admire a career like Kevin Bacon’s. The man has literally done it all from huge box office hits to cult films to horror to comedy to television and everything in between. He even inspired a social game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon proving that he has worked with absolutely everybody in Hollywood. Last year was the last season of his hit show The Following and he even paid tribute to his own career in a British commercial for EE Mobile and duplicated his famous Footloose dance scene for a skit on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He has become a beloved Hollywood icon and for good reason. His new film out this week is Cop Car.
Sheriff Kretzer (Bacon) is a less than honorable cop. When out in the middle of nowhere disposing of two bodies in his trunk, a pair of runaway ten year olds find his cruiser and decide to take it for a joyride. But with one body still in the trunk, Kretzer must find the boys and get the car back before his job, his freedom and maybe even his life are threatened. And the boys are not prepared for the deadly game of cat and mouse they have found themselves in.
Cop Car is a hugely entertaining chase movie with a great aesthetic and two killer performances by James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford as the mischievous ten year olds. Bacon is great too as the frustrated and deadly cop and he is usually the one that steals scenes in the movies he stars in, but this time he is definitely upstaged by the two young actors. The story is nerve wracking when the boys steal and drive the car but it gets extraordinarily tense as the boys discover the stash of guns in the trunk. And these are no dumb kids, they know how to hold their own against a seemingly unbalanced police sheriff who is determined to stop them. Cop Car is a great fast paced thriller with great direction, great Colorado scenery and great performances. Recommended.
