Here we go again with phenomenal animated features. Despicable Me was a huge hit in 2010, which was one of the best years for animated features in recent memory with films like How to Train Your Dragon and Megamind in the mix as well. Now we finally get to see the continued adventures of reformed super villain Gru and his adopted daughters.
Leaving the life of a supervillain behind him, Gru (Steve Carell) is enjoying family life with his daughters and trying to find his niche in a good guy world. When the secretive anti-villain league recruits Gru to help with an investigation, Gru finds a new sense of purpose. Partnered up with a kooky agent, Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig), Gru sets out to find out who is behind the latest nefarious activity in a local mall while trying to maintain control of his daughters and his legion of minions.
Despicable Me was outrageously charming and I had a hard time thinking they would be able to duplicate that magic, but with the original directors back on board, Despicable Me 2 is just as lovable and hilarious as its predecessor. Carell continues to do a fantastic job with the voice of Gru and the added bonus of having Kristen Wiig as his partner/love interest is the cherry on top. The jokes are plentiful and thoroughly enjoyable for adults and kids alike and the animation is top notch as usual. And you really can’t beat the minions for unadulterated comic value. Despicable Me 2 is a worthy sequel and a heck of a good time.
The Blu-ray from Universal Home Entertainment is exactly what we have come to expect from this genre. Perfect. Bold colors and perfect clarity are the hallmarks of the latest animated films and this one is no exception. For a great laugh and lots of the warm fuzzies, Despicable Me 2 is just what you need. Highly recommended.
