When the original Dragonheart was released in 1996, it barely broke even at the box office despite some impressive CG work on the dragon and the accompanying voice work by Sean Connery. In the years since though it has become a fantasy favorite among fans and has had a good life on home video. In 200o it spawned a sequel that almost immediately fizzled and disappeared. So it is a little strange that now, 19 years after the original, a second sequel has appeared on shelves, Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse, this time with Ben Kingsley taking over the role of the voice of Drago.
When an aspiring knight named Gareth (Julian Morris) searches for a fallen comet rumored to contain gold, he instead finds a talking dragon he names Drago (Ben Kingsley). After Drago saves Gareth’s life not once but twice, they form a bond and must work together to defeat an evil sorcerer determined to take over the entire kingdom. With the help of a few friends, Drago and Gareth take on a great evil and learn in the process what it is to be honorable and true, the signs of a real knight.
I was kinda excited for Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse as I am one of the people who quite liked the Dennis Quaid original. And Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse does have a lot going for it. The acting is above average for a direct to video fantasy film, the story is decent and the production design was above average as well. The only problem I found with the film is that there really isn’t much of the dragon. The great majority of the film full of scenes with humans interacting with other humans. That wouldn’t be so bad if it were just another fantasy action film but its called Dragonheart for goodness sakes. But that quibble aside, fans of the genre will find a good movie here, especially with the performance of Gareth’s friend Rhonu played by Tamzin Merchant. Tamzin was a regular on The Tudors, is now on Salem and is one of the best things about Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse. But it still could have used more dragon.
