The sci-fi revolution continues with Elysium, the new film by Neill Blomkamp, who already had a big hand in the sci fi comeback with District 9 in 2009. Sci Fi is bigger than ever with more films out this year and scheduled for next year than you can believe.
Matt Damon plays Max, a factory worker on Earth in the future. The planet has become a massive slum for the 99% of the population with natural resources and pretty much all necessities in short supply. The wealthy 1% have all moved off world to a rotating space colony called Elysium where all problems have been solved including the eradication of all sickness and disease. When Max gets in an accident and is exposed to lethal radiation at work, he is given mere days to live, so he joins a group of rebels who fuse an exoskeleton to him in hopes that he can infiltrate Elysium and get himself cured. But the head of security for Elysium (Jodie Foster) is not about to let that happen.
Elysium is a rollicking fun science fiction romp that is loaded to the gills with action and spectacular special effects. Damon is excellent as always as is the supporting cast and a nasty villain in Sharlto Copley’s Kruger. The tech in the movie is fascinating and the whole movie has a very realistic feel to it thanks to the attention to detail and style that Blomkamp brought to District 9 and made that film stand out from its competition. Everything has an incredible tangible authenticity that just escalates the tension and believability of the story. Blomkamp is an amazing sci fi director and I hope we don’t have to wait 4 years for his next film.
The Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is stunning. Astounding clarity and detail with a gritty and realistic color palette make one amazing looking disc. And the audio will test the limits of your speakers with fully immersive surround and a booming low end. This is definitely in my top 10 of the year and an essential holiday pick for gift giving to the movie lover on your list. Highly recommended.
