Ever since I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind when I was a kid, I have been fascinated with aliens. And with that I have had a fascination with alien movies. I like the big budget shoot em ups like Independence Day a lot, but for my money I am more intrigued by the smaller films, especially over the last decade or so. Communion with Christopher Walken, the brilliant Fire in the Sky with D.B. Sweeney, The Fourth Kind with Milla Jovovich, and Dark Skies with Keri Russell just to name a few faves. But a new one has joined the ranks, Extraterrestrial from The Vicious Brothers who previously brought us the two excellent Grave Encounters films.
April (Brittany Allen) and her boyfriend Kyle (Freddie Stroma) are planning to go to her parents cabin for a romantic weekend alone, however she finds out that Kyle has invited his annoying friend Seth (Jesse Moss), Seth’s girlfriend Lex (Anja Savcic), and another friend named Melanie (Melanie Papalia) along. Their first night at the cabin the group witnesses something fall out of the sky and crash in the woods nearby. Upon investigation it appears to be a UFO. Scared, they return to the cabin where they encounter an alien and proceed to shoot it causing the remaining aliens to hunt them down one by one.
Extraterrestrial is one hell of a fun movie. The basic premise is a formulaic one but it has one big thing going for it that many other aliens don’t. It shows you the aliens often and they are friggin scary. These aliens are ass kicking scary bastards that are not only fast and deadly but have incredible mind control powers that make for some pretty crazy situations. The production quality is very good; The Vicious Brothers seem to be masters of putting their entire budget on screen. Both Grave Encounters movies look fantastic for very low budgets. They are also very good at pacing and delivering scares. And not quick jump scares but jaw dropping WTF scares. Extraterrestrial is an excellent movie night choice with friends as it is bound to prompt many comments at the screen and lot of nervous laughs and jumps. Highly recommended.
