Shout Factory is essentially my personal dealer waiting for my under a streetlamp to sell me the thing I crave the most; movies. And not just any movies, Shout has released some of the best cult classic and horror titles ever. They take meticulous care when restoring them, often commission new artwork and load as much into the special features as humanly possible. Now that they have released so many well-known cult faves, they are turning their attention to the low budget gems that used to line the walls of the VHS rental stores back in the day. Movies that I guarantee no other distributor would take the time to release on DVD let alone on Blu-ray. This week marks a whole whack of great stuff from the label including this awesome little treat.
The Final Terror concerns a group of forest rangers out camping for the weekend in an area of the woods that, according to campfire legend, is where a demented mother preys on innocent victims seeking revenge for past treatment of her son.
The Final Terror is definitely a by the numbers killer in the woods film, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t still tons of fun. Part of the reason for that is the up and coming cast. Among the group of campers are Daryl Hannah, Rachel Ward, Adrian Zmed, and Joe Pantoliano. With the exception of Adrian Zmed, you can really see the charm in the other three actors and why they all went on to pretty significant Hollywood careers. Pantoliano in particular is almost unrecognizable at first but really plays up his role well. And the film is even directed by an up and comer: Andrew Davis who would go on to direct such action classics as The Fugitive and Above the Law. The standard pick off happens as the campers continue to fornicate and trudge through the woods and it is almost as effective as the Friday the 13th series and must be commended for still being as entertaining as those. Shout’s transfer is quite good as well with a nice clean picture and clear soundtrack. A nice little gem.
