The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the most successful series of connected film ever with unparalleled success across the board starting with Iron Man in 2008. And while their films have covered everything from billionaire genius’ to otherworldly Gods to enhanced humans, mutated green monsters and even a magic wielding surgeon, one of the most unlikely of their films ended up being Guardians of the Galaxy featuring a space pirate, a giant walking tree, a green warrior, a blue fighter driven by vengeance and a talking raccoon bounty hunter. Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge hit and spawned a sequel this year out this month on Blu-ray and DVD, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.
After saving Xandar from Ronan’s wrath, the Guardians find themselves stranded on a remote planet after a crash landing during a mission. They meet a mysterious man named Ego (Kurt Russell) who claims to actually be Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) father. Now the Guardians must figure out if Ego is actually family or foe, as well as fend off armies sent to find them and destroy them led by Peter’s own adoptive guardian, Yondu (Michael Rooker).
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 takes everything that was great about the first movie and amps it up even more. In addition to spectacular action sequences and more visual eye candy than your TV can handle, there is more comedy in this film than in most comedies. The laughs are a mile a minute and solid, genuine belly laughs at that. This entire cast is the ensemble of a lifetime and they all have such incredible chemistry it is just perfection. The most amazing thing though is that amidst all this action, comedy, special effects and popcorn fun, there are really authentic emotional moments that literally had me tearing up. James Gunn is a genius and really knows his stuff, which makes the Guardians of the Galaxy films something special, even in a universe as expansive as Marvels.
As if this kick ass movie wasn’t enough, Disney and Marvel have been kind enough to also include loads of special features on the Blu-ray for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 as well. Their blooper reels are almost as funny as the movie itself, and you also get over 80 minutes of other features including a great making of doc, a music video starring David Hasselhoff (!), deleted scenes, audio commentary with James Gunn, and more! This one is a keeper folks, and is guaranteed to keep the whole family laughing and wowed.
