Disney and Marvel really do have the golden touch in recent years. Marvel has been brilliant at choosing which properties to bring to the screen and Disney works magic in the talent involved and marketing of those films. They are a force to be reckoned with. But when they announced a while back there would be a film of a lesser known comic called Guardians of the Galaxy it left people scratching their heads. A misfit group of outlaws that team up to save the galaxy led by a human and counting a giant tree creature and a talking racoon among its members? And none of us had ever heard of it before? We figured they were crazy. But when Guardians of the Galaxy hit theatres this summer it proved that Marvel and Disney could even make hits out of properties no one knew and with a cast of lesser known actors with no real star power attached.
Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a human working in space as a scavenger and getter of things. When a mysterious force threatens the galaxy and comes after Quill when he steals a strange orb, Quill teams up with a group of misfit outlaws including Rocket (Bradley Cooper), a genetically altered talking racoon, Groot (Vin Diesel), a giant tree creature and companion to Rocket, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) a deadly assassin, and Drax (Dave Bautista) a hulking killer bent on revenge. Together they set out to stop the powerful Ronan the Accuser from enslaving all life in the galaxy.
There were simply no movies this year as flat out fun as Guardians of the Galaxy. The excellent casting and chemistry between Pratt, Cooper, Diesel, Saldana and Bautista is brilliant and rare. As is the near perfect blend of sci-fi, action, comedy and thrills. This film really has it all, even great special effects and a killer soundtrack. Pratt has solidified his position as a leading man now and director James Gunn, known best for his lower budget cult genre fare like Slither and Super, has now catapulted himself into the big leagues. And the icing on the cake is that this movie really has something for absolutely everyone. It is kid friendly but adults will love it for the edgy humor and action. Guardians of the Galaxy is the perfect popcorn movie.
The Blu-ray from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is stunning and will be the perfect disc for showing off your home theatre system. A near perfect picture, a great audio track full of spectacular surround and a kick ass musical soundtrack and full of brilliant color, Guardians of the Galaxy is the Blu-ray to beat this year. Very highly recommended.
