A popular plot device in thrillers, horror and sci-fi, especially over the past decade or so, has been the idea of a plague or virus let loose upon society. It is a great way to explore our societal fears, our behaviours and our shortcomings. It can come in the form of medical thrillers, zombies, or even vampires as in the recent FX series The Strain. Another series exploring these themes is Helix, which is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.
Helix takes place at a bioresearch station in the Arctic where a mysterious virus has been released among the residents of the remote station. When the entire facility is quarantined, not only do they have to deal with the virus itself and the violent effect it has on its victims, but they also have to deal with frustrated workers who may be driven to mutiny or escape attempts, which could potentially threaten the entire planet.
Helix: Season One is a solid sci-fi show that does a great job of balancing the science thriller aspects of the story with the more horror driven infected zombie like victims element that keeps you on the edge of your seat as they are unleashed within the buildings. The cast including Kyra Zagorsky, Jordan Hayes, Billy Campbell and Hiroyuki Sanada are all excellent and keep the proceedings believable. The inherent fears we have about viral outbreaks are definitely played with in Helix to great effect. The makeup and effects are above average for a TV series and the story arc is quite interesting with underlying themes of corporate greed. Helix: Season One is a solid start to an interesting series with lots of potential.
The Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is very nice indeed. While not quite achieving the quality of an HBO or FX series, Helix: Season One is still a sharp and clean looking show with a quality transfer that shows off the bleak surroundings with clarity and detail. Definitely worth a look.
