I have said if before and I will defend it always. Tom Cruise is the most reliable movie star on the planet. Perhaps ever. Cruise always puts 110% into every role, picks his movies with his audience in mind, does his stunts not only because he enjoys stunt work but because he thinks it enriches the audience experience. There are very few movies within Cruises filmography that I did not enjoy and even those I didn’t care for I think he still have his all. In 2012 he brought bestselling author Lee Child’s hero Jack Reacher to the big screen amidst much controversy from fans. The literary Reacher is a 6’5” blonde hulk. Cruise is 5’7”. But Cruise uses acting to make for this lack of physical size by using his presence, his attitude, his characters skills and pure intimidation to pull off the effect. Jack Reacher was a worldwide hit so it was inevitable that a sequel would come along.
Jack Reacher (Cruise) has just wrapped up a trafficking case with the help of the new commander of his former unit Major Turner (Cobie Smulders). Wanting to meet Turner in person, Reacher visits his old unit only to find out that Turner has been detained on espionage charges and Reacher is to be held as well. After escaping custody with Turner, the two must survive on the run while they try to figure out the case against them and the mysterious murder of two of Turner’s soldiers overseas.
I am a huge Cruise fan, especially of the stellar Mission: Impossible series, which just seems to get better with every entry. Reacher is right up there with Cruises best characters and while Jack Reacher: Never Go Back doesn’t quite hit the ballsy level of the first Jack Reacher, it is still an excellent adult thriller with an interesting storyline and some great action sequences. And the addition of Cobie Smulders as Cruises partner was a brilliant move. Smulders is just as kick ass as Cruise and plays Turner as a tough, smart counter to Reacher’s brooding hero. They have great chemistry and really work well together. I did miss that there really wasn’t that one great memorable villain as in the first movie but there is still lots to love in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
If you pick up Jack Reacher: Never Go Back on its first run on shelves on Blu-ray, you also get a pretty damn cool original illustrated Jack Reacher story by Lee Child in the form of a little Blu-ray sized mini book. This is an original collectible and a great little add on for fans. Highly recommended.
