In 2014, The LEGO Movie hit theatres and while some may have doubted if a feature length movie about the building block toys could actually work, the movie was a huge hit thanks to the genius of writer/directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It not only looked fantastic with stunning visuals but it had its own brand of humor that appealed to kids and adults alike with loads of pop culture references, a great storyline and lots of action. So it only seemed natural that Warner Bros. would seek to bring us more LEGO movies. The second one, The LEGO Batman Movie, arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this month, but did they strike gold again, especially with Lord and Miller backing off into producer-only roles?
Bruce Wayne (Will Arnett) is enjoying his single rich life and his secret life of being Gotham’s savior Batman. But after The Joker frees a legion of villains from the Phantom Zone, it is up to Batman and his accidentally adopted ward/sidekick Dick Grayson/Robin (Michael Cera) to save Gotham. And maybe teach Batman a few things about working with others and that there is more to life than money and saving people.
Even though Lord and Miller are not at the helm here, their influence is definitely felt. The LEGO Batman Movie is a pure joy. Again, they have managed to make the film totally enjoyable for viewers of any age with hilarious jokes and visual gags, pop culture references, spectacular visuals and top notch voice work from Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Feinnes, Zach Galifianakis, Jenny Slate, Conan O’Brien, Billy Dee Williams and Eddie Izzard. With both LEGO movies I was shocked at just how often I laughed, the comedy writing in these films is better than most live action comedies. The LEGO Batman Movie is the perfect blend of animation, action, comedy and superhero goodness. Guaranteed fun for anyone and everyone in the house. Highly recommended.
