I don’t usually tackle kids DVD releases that are not of the ‘studio film’ variety, but being the Dad of a five year old girl and having five years of kids TV viewing behind me, I felt compelled to write a review for the new release Littlest Pet Shop: Little Pets, Big Adventures. Based on the line of toys that have been out for years, this is the first time the little pets have been in cartoon form. My daughter has always had the toys and just loves the idea of having so many little pets, so it seemed only natural for her to want to check out the cartoon.
Now for the big surprise. It was really good! I was taken aback by the quality of the shows on this DVD. The character voice acting was excellent, the animation really cute but not cheap looking at all, in fact it looked more like the quality of a theatrical animated movie than a Saturday morning cartoon. And it was damn funny as well. I actually found myself laughing at this cartoon along with my daughter. It seemed to have that same sense of humor that other intelligent kids’ cartoons as of late like the new My Little Pony and a lot of the Disney channel stuff. And don’t forget the music. Everything has to have songs now; companies know the kids have iPods and Leap Pads now, so they have to have their music. But again, instead of the grating, monotonous dreck usually in animated stuff, the music is catching and sounds like it actually had people who know something about music involved with its conception.
Overall I have to say I really don’t mind when my little girl chooses Littlest Pet Shop: Little Pets, Big Adventures to put in the DVD player, it is a well-made, funny and entertaining animated show that she fell in love with and I wasn’t bored by. Hopefully there will be more where they came from and we can expect a series of Littlest Pet Shop DVD’s. Recommended.
