Disney is most famous for its animated film classics, but their live action family films are just as legendary. While my favorite live action family movie of that era is probably MGM’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the most famous film of the time has got to be Mary Poppins which is seeing its debut on hi def this week.
Mr. Banks (David Tomlinson) is a no nonsense banker who just does not connect with his children Jane and Michael. When the mischievous kids drive out nanny after nanny, they create their dream list of the qualities they are looking for in a nanny, a list that is immediately dismissed by their father. But magically arriving on their doorstep and taking over the job of nanny is Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews). Mary is unlike any women anyone has ever seen and with the help of her friend Bert (Dick Van Dyke) they will not only take the kids on journeys beyond their wildest imaginations, but they will forever change the lives of their parents and everyone whose lives they touch.
It doesn’t get any more classic than Mary Poppins. With a genius performance by Andrews and the superb Dick Van Dyke at his song and dance best, Mary Poppins features memorable songs, brilliant scenes of live action blending with animation, and unique and imaginative dance numbers. Van Dyke has always been the highlight of the film for me, but he is a hard one to top in any film he has appeared in, he just naturally commands the screen. With a special feature packed new Blu-ray now released, Mary Poppins is destined to become one of the most essential hi def discs of the year.
Disney’s restoration on Mary Poppins is just beautiful. Full of bright color and a wonderful cleaned up and sharp new transfer, Mary has definitely never looked better. Highly recommended.
Available now on Blu-ray and DVD.
