I love a good comedy but I also find comedy to be the genre I am mostly picky about. There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to what I like and dislike but comedy is very personal and has to hit you the right way. I like a dumb comedy as much as the next guy but I tend to be turned off by ‘drugs are cool’ focused films like Pineapple Express and even the recent The Night Before, which had great potential until it decided to just be stupid. And yet I love the Harold and Kumar movies. Go figure. A new film out this month features some of the hottest actors in comedy right now, Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. And the real kicker is it is based on a true story.
Mike and Dave Stangle (Devine and Efron) are hard partying brothers with a knack for ruining any event they show up to. So when their sister Jeanie (Sugar Lyn Beard) announced she is getting married in Hawaii, it takes a family intervention to tell the boys they must behave and actually bring dates to the wedding instead of hitting on every woman in attendance. After an exhaustive search they meet Alice (Kendrick) and Tatiana (Plaza), a teacher and wall street trader who seem to really have their acts together. But little do the Stangle’s know that Alice and Tatiana are actually con artist losers just out to get a free trip to Hawaii.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates was a fabulously fun movie. There were many times I thought the movie might push the boundary too far and go into unneeded crude territory but to my delight it just kept things funny. Not to say it didn’t go for toilet humor, it definitely does, but it never lowered itself to epic dumbass proportions. Efron has been establishing himself as quite the comedic actor and for good reason. He is not only a great actor as witnessed in films like Charlie St. Cloud, Parkland and The Paperboy but he is a damn funny dude in films like Neighbors and Dirty Grandpa (which was terrible, but he was funny). Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates might be his best yet. Adam Devine has been enjoying quite a streak since his breakout role in 2012’s Pitch Perfect with great turns in films like The Intern, The Final Girls and a great recurring role in the sitcom Modern Family. He has a very unique persona that really works great in films like this. Anna Kendrick has also been enjoying a consistent career since Pitch Perfect but was a regular face on the movie screen even before that with films like the Twilight series, Up in the Air, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, 50/50 and more. Same with Aubrey Plaza in films like also in Scott Pilgrim, Safety Not Guaranteed, and the hilarious Life After Beth. This is a fantastic cast in a really funny flick. And the fact that it is based on a true story makes it all the funnier. For a great and hilarious movie featuring some of the best comedy has to offer right now, check out Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Highly recommended.
