Being a guy who doesn’t really follow any sports, it seems add that I certainly do love a great sports movie. One of my favorite movies of all time is The Natural, I love Field of Dreams, We Are Marshall, Rudy, and many more. There doesn’t seem to be as many sports films in the past few years but a recent Disney effort is out this Tuesday and definitely deserves a look from sports films fans and just film fans in general.
Million Dollar Arm is the true story of J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm), a sports agent that is getting beat at every turn by a competitor with deep pockets. In trying to find a way to tap talent no one else is looking into he decides to start a competition in India to find Cricket players he can turn into Baseball pitchers. After an exhaustive search he finds two prospects ad brings them to Los Angeles to train over a very short time period to become ready to play in the big leagues. But he may learn more about life than he expected when he bonds with the two young men who are putting everything on the line for him.
Million Dollar Arm is one of those feel good sports movies that just hits every note right. Hamm is excellent as the brash and unlikable agent who rediscovers his humanity when he recruits the two young Indian boys. Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal are both excellent in the roles of Rinku and Dinesh, the Indian prospects. For Sharma this is only his second film after his phenomenal performance as Pi in Life of Pi and Mittal has only been in a few movies as well. Both guys are really great here and I hope they are given more roles as they are both very good actors deserving of fuller careers in acting. Million Dollar Arm is inspiring, funny, interesting and emotional. What more can you ask for in a sports movie?
The Blu-ray from Disney is great with a beautiful transfer and a solid audio presentation. Disney rarely disappoints with its Blu-ray’s and certainly doesn’t here. Million Dollar Arm is highly recommended.
