Sylvester Stallone is one of the biggest movie stars of all time and during the 70s and 80s, you would be hard pressed to find a bigger star. After Rocky in 1976 Stallone tried to do a couple of different films with F.I.S.T. and Paradise Alley, then returned to the role of Rocky in 1979 with Rocky II. After that he would take a two-year break before returning to the screen in a gritty New York cop drama called Nighthawks. Only a year after Nighthawks Stallone’s career rocketed into the stratosphere with the dual hit combo in 1982 of Rocky III and First Blood. But Nighthawks finally makes its Blu-ray debut this month in a wonderful Collector’s Edition from Shout Factory.
Deke DaSilva (Stallone) and his partner Matthew Fox (Billy Dee Williams) are two dedicated New York City cops who are drafted into an elite anti-terrorism squad. When infamous international terrorist Wulfgar Reinhardt (Rutger Hauer) shows up on American soil with plans to stage multiple attacks on its citizens, DaSilva and Fox must try to stay one step ahead of him if they are going to have any chance of stopping him.
Not only is Nighthawks a fantastic cop movie with a brilliant pairing of two great stars in the lead roles but it also features one of the best screen villains in Hauer’s Wulfgar. He is an absolutely cold and calculating killer who enjoys playing games with innocent lives. And the year after this Hauer went on to create another iconic villain in Blade Runner. Nighthawks is fast paced, exciting, tense and action packed, everything you could want in a great cop movie. And it features one of the only performances by Stallone sporting a beard, which looks badass. Nighthawks is all kinds of awesome and if by chance you never stumbled upon it, now is your chance.
The new Collectors Edition contains a great selection of new special features including Lights, Camera, Action! – An Audio Interview With Producer Herb Nanas, Nighthawks: The First Draft – An Interview With Writer Paul Sylbert, We Gotta Shoot This! – An Interview With Director Of Photography James A.
