Honestly I am very surprised it took Hollywood this long to make a movie called Ouija. It kinda seems like an obvious choice of subject matter. And while it didn’t seem to make much a splash at the box office and the majority of the reviews were negative, it actually managed to make almost $100 million at the worldwide box office on a $5 million budget. And people wonder why Hollywood keep making these horror movies?
Laine Morris (Olivia Cooke) is heartbroken after the apparent suicide of her friend Debbie (Shelley Hennig). But Laine known just before her death Debbie was playing with an Ouija board they had experimented with before. Laine refuses to believe her friend would end her own life and finds the Ouija board in Debbie’s closet determined to find out what was happening and what mysterious force may be responsible for Debbie’s death.
While a great deal of the horror community tends to write off Hollywood horror like Ouija, I have actually liked many of the similar films that have been made in the past few years. The Apparition, The Devil Inside, all the Paranormal Activities, I have really dug them all. I think there is a place in horror for these films which are not badly made, they just might be a little more generic and less hardcore than many horror fans are looking for. But that doesn’t take away from their enjoyability for me. Ouija was a lot of fun, solid story, very nice direction throughout, some good jump scares and a great lead performance by Olivia Cooke from Bates Motel, who, with only 8 credits to her name so far, is making a name for herself in horror. Ouija is no masterpiece but it is a fun little horror romp that looks great on Blu-ray and makes for a great horror movie on cold winter night.
