The Pitch Perfect films have been a very successful franchise thus far thanks to the charismatic cast led by the eternally adorable Anna Kendrick, great and inventive musical numbers and some great humor. The third (and final?) installment, Pitch Perfect 3, hits shelves this week and brings all the girls back for one last gig.
After winning the World Championship, the Bella’s have all moved on to their own lives but they all feel like something is missing. So when the opportunity comes to reunite one last time for an overseas USO tour that could lead to an opening act gig with a popular artist, the girls get together to try and make music again and pursue their dreams. There are obstacles in the way of course including other bands competing for the tour spot, the return of Amy’s (Rebel Wilson) estranged father (John Lithgow), and some budding romances on the road.
The Pitch Perfect films are not rocket science. They are silly, innocent fun punctuated by catching inventive music and some great humor thrown in with memorable characters we love to revisit.
While this entry is missing a few peripheral memorable characters such as Skylar Astin’s Jesse and Adam Devine’s Bumper, all the women return in top form, especially Kendrick and Wilson, and some great added musical diversity with a great real country band called Whiskey Shivers and a rock band led by Ruby Rose. Things get a little sillier than usual here with a storyline following John Lithgow’s character, but overall Pitch Perfect 3 is still tons of fun with some memorable musical numbers and lots of laughs to carry you through. I actually would have preferred a few more musical numbers but all in all this is still a fun close out to an entertaining trilogy. Recommended.
