Sometimes movies are as bad as the trailers led you to believe they were. You would think you can’t really go wrong with Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds, Mary-Louise Parker, Kevin Bacon, James Hong, and Robert Knepper in a supernatural comedy but let me assure you…you can go wrong.
Ryan Reynolds is Nick, a good cop who made a bad decision who wants to now make the right decision but who ends up being the victim of his own partner who really only makes bad decisions. Now dead, Nick is automatically drafted into the R.I.P.D., a police department for the afterlife. While Nick agrees to take on his new position, he really only does so to provide himself a way to get back to his old life. Hi-jinks ensue.
You know, there are movies that remind you of other movies, but it is usually just in style, or theme, or setting. R.I.P.D. is exactly Men in Black. It is like they took the old movie and CG’d all over it to make it look different. And we aren’t supposed to care because WOW, look at all the special effects. No, this is not reminiscent of Men in Black, it is a direct clone. Bridges and Reynolds seem to be having fun with it but it feels so cold and lifeless that no amount of fun could save it. Just a boring mess.
The Blu-ray from Universal Home Video is stunning though. Bright bold picture, great detail and clarity, nice immersive sound. Too bad I was too bored and uninterested to care about it.
