It seems that two franchises that keep rolling along lately are the Paranormal Activity’s and the Resident Evil’s. They are the current equivalents of the Friday the 13th’s and Nightmare on Elm St’s of the 80’s, although people love slamming these ones and looking back on the latter with blind affection. For my money, both of these series are doing a damn fine job cranking out an entry pretty much every year and making them plenty entertaining. The latest for the Resident Evil franchise is Retribution, out now on Blu-ray and DVD.
Alice (Milla Jovovich) is back, although she never really left. As the Umbrella Corporation’s T-Virus continues to devastate the earth, Alice has been captured and is being held in an underwater base in the Arctic Circle. The Red Queen is now controlling Umbrella and Alice, along with a band of resistance fighters, must fight their way out of the massive base and find a way to save the remainder of the human race from extinction.
I personally really liked the last installment of this series, Resident Evil Afterlife, and Retribution really does stay on the same path set there. As the second film in the series to be filmed in 3D, many of the visual cues fall flat in 2D on Blu-ray, but the film still looks spectacular. The action of more plentiful here, but I did enjoy the prison setting of Afterlife more. One cool element here is Alice and her team having to travel through simulation areas of the Umbrella base, like a simulated Tokyo, and a replica of Alice’s own suburban neighbourhood from before the apocalypse. The return of several franchise characters as clones is also welcome, especially Michelle Rodriguez as Rain, albeit this time she is quite evil and underused a little. Still, this entry gives you everything you desire in a Resident Evil film, creatures, gunfights, gore, and action galore. And the set up for the next film is very encouraging as it finally gives Alice her T-Virus powers back…can’t wait for that one.
The Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is spectacular. Crystal clear, excellent detail, bright colors and a roaring soundtrack make this a true home theatre tester. Crank this one up; you’ll enjoy the immersive experience. While maybe still not achieving the heights achieved in parts 1 & 3, Resident Evil Retribution still packs a wallop and serves up exactly what you would be looking for in a Resident Evil film. Keep em coming…
