Oh glorious cheese. Sy Fy has been making cheesy sci fi movies for years now but when it made Sharknado in 2013 it started a new wave of over the top, ridiculously premised movies that became hits with fans of schlock everywhere. Sharknado became a cultural icon and brought a little light back into the careers of former Beverly Hills 90210 actors. Now we have settled into a world in which a movie like Sharknado exists and a year has passed and BAM! I give you Sharknado 2: The Second One.
After surviving the first Sharknado in Los Angeles, Fin Shepard (Ian Ziering) and April Wexler (Tara Reid) are on a plane to New York for a signing of April’s bestselling book “How to Survive a Sharknado”. But mid flight a storm hits that is carrying yet another Sharknado. Once Fin lands the plane safely he must find a way to once again defeat the massive Sharknado’s, but this time he will need more than a bomb, he will need the help of every New Yorker.
I can’t even begin to articulate how insanely silly this movie is, it even makes the original pale by comparison and that is saying a lot. The CG effects are appropriately bad but fit in well with the over the top nature of the movie. To see Ian Ziering riding on the back of a shark as it flies through the air is not a sight I would have ever thought my eyes would witness. Now of course the film is made with the tongue in cheek and that is obvious, so as long as you know what you are in for (which you should due to the title) there is a lot of fun to be had here. There are tons of cameos by all kinds of celebrities and so many references to other movies you could probably make a drinking game out of it. But the funniest thing to me is how seriously Ziering seems to be taking everything. While everyone else is obviously hamming it up Ziering seems to be choosing which scene will be the clip played at the Oscars. Which means he is either a really terrible actor or a very good one.
Available now on DVD and Blu-ray.
Film: 2 (or 4, it really depends on what you are grading it for)
