Although I grew up a Star Wars fanatic, I was not among the fan base that shunned Star Trek. I saw the good in both franchises and quite liked the adventures of James T. Kirk and his crew. I have enjoyed all of the film entries in the series as well, including the Next Generation films. When J.J. Abrams announced he was rebooting the series, I was all for it and will always stand behind Abrams as his visions always seem to encapsulate what I love about movies. And the result was phenomenal. So the inevitable sequel has now arrived with Star Trek Into Darkness.
Captain Kirk and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise have been carrying out the directives of Starfleet since the events of the first film, but as usual, Kirk’s rogue methods have landed him in hot water once again. But when a threat within Starfleet threatens mankind itself, Kirk and his team may be the only ones who can stop one of Starfleet’s own from taking them all down.
Where Abrams may have misstepped here is to reinterpret the most loved Star Trek film of all, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. In doing so, he guaranteed himself a legion of fans that would rebel at the idea of toying with the classic story. But the box office proved otherwise and Star Trek Into Darkness ended up one of the biggest and most talked about movies of the year. I for one loved it, although not quite as much as the first film. But it was a fast paced, action filled thrill ride that I will take many more times in the future. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and the rest of the cast are all very comfortable in their character skins now and pull of the film with ease and comfort making it already feel like the franchise we have always loved. As with many film naysayers, I think much of the hate came from nostalgia for the original film instead of actually being about this one. What it comes down to for me is that the film was a hell of a lot of fun with some of the best special effects this year and I highly recommend it.
The Blu-ray from Paramount is easily one of the top discs of the year. A near flawless picture with great depth and detail and a soundtrack worthy of those warp engines is sure to be a regular in your Blu-ray player. A good chunk of extras are included and it is just a great popcorn sci fi action movie that you will not want to miss.
Available now on Blu-ray and DVD.
