I will just come out and say it. Strike Back is not only my favorite show on TV; it is one of my favorite shows of all time. The Showtime show is just about to start its third season, and this week we see the arrival of Season Two on Blu-ray and DVD. If Strike Back is a show you are not yet familiar with, remedy that immediately and go buy both of the first two seasons, you will not regret it.
Sergeant Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and his partner former Delta Force operative Damian Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) are back on duty for the British secret operations unit Section 20. This time out they are after Conrad Knox (Charles Dance), a wealthy criminal who wants to clean the streets of South Africa and form his own militia in the process. After securing nuclear weapons, Knox is determined to become a power to reckon with in South Africa and enlists the assistance of mercenary Karl Matlock (Vincent Regan) and his sniper partner Jessica Kohl (Natalie Becker) to handle all of his dirty work. Scott and Stonebridge must stop Knox before he decides to wield his newfound power and potential kill thousands of innocents.
If you are a fan of action movies, you absolutely must watch Strike Back. Not only is the action superior to the action in the majority of feature films, but the ongoing stories are incredibly well structured and engrossing, the production values are out of this world, every episode looks like a big budget film, and the acting is top tier, especially in the case of Winchester and Stapleton. The team of Scott and Stonebridge are now to me as timeless and memorable as Riggs and Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon or any other action icons you could name. Strangely enough, American Winchester plays the Brit, and Aussie Stapleton plays the American, and both of them do it flawlessly. The banter between them is priceless, but the connection between the two characters is meticulously written and wholly believable. I honestly wish each season of Strike Back was 40 episodes, the show is that good.
The Blu-ray set for Strike Back: Season Two from HBO is real eye candy. This is a phenomenal transfer of a phenomenal show. Much of the action is in broad daylight and usually in foreign countries and the picture is just gorgeous. Detail is staggering, clarity is exceptional, colors are bold and saturated and the soundtrack is booming and immersive. This show is an action lover’s dream come true and for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and remedy that immediately. Strike Back is the best show on TV.
