It is no secret to any of my readers or any of my friends that I am so tired of the trend of negative reviewing and commenting that has been dominating the world of movie talk for years now. I can’t stand that talking film has become about what is wrong with movies and how tired people are of trends instead of using all of that time and energy for talking about movies we love and want to spread the word on. The internet is a wonderful thing, but when it comes to things like ‘talkbacks’ on certain review sites, they become a haven for bashing films, often before anyone has even seen them, instead of communities of film lovers sharing their love for films.
Today it seems to have come to a new low point as Yahoo movies posted an article called “The Most Disappointing Movies of 2012”. What is the first film listed? Man of Steel. Yeah that’s right, the movie that is out next summer, like summer 2013. We haven’t even had a full trailer yet. Now, when you read the blurb about it, it seems to be that they are disappointed in the fact that Superman no longer has underwear on the outside of his costume. I don’t know why that fact qualifies as a disappointing movie as a whole, should the article maybe have been called “The Most Disappointing Movie News of 2012”? Probably. But it still sends this message that the movie is bound to burn before we even see real footage. Keep in mind, they also list Battleship (which was a surprise blast for me), Cloud Atlas (which I loved), Prometheus (which a hell of a lot of people loved including me), and listed The Oogieloves and The Watch as disappointments. Were these two movies ever anticipated to be good?
Negative reviewing is a trend I for one would like to see end. If we hate a film, let’s just move on and let it disappear into obscurity and spend our energy getting people to go out and see movies that deserve the butts in seats.
