The Monkey’s Paw is a story I remember from when I was a small kid. It always freaked me out and I often wondered why more movies have not been made from the chilling tale of wishes granted. This week we get a new film based on the classic story starring Stephen Lang of Avatar.
Jake Tilton (C.J. Thomason) is just a regular guy, but when he acquires a mystical talisman called a monkey’s paw, his world is torn apart. The paw supposedly holds the power to grant its owner three wishes. When Jake uses up two wishes and accidentally brings his friend and co-worker Tony Cobb (Lang) back from the dead, he must try to outwit the psychotic resurrected man when he tries to obtain the paw to bring his son back to life.
The Monkey’s Paw is a tense exercise in critical decision making with some great suspense and a scene stealing performance by Lang. The buildup of making the wishes is played with interestingly to some degree but I couldn’t help but think that could have been a bigger element I the plot. Regardless, The Monkey’s Paw is well paced and written and makes for a good old fashioned chiller movie night.
The Blu-ray from Shout Factory is pretty damn nice looking for a low budget feature. Shout always gives their best when it comes to transfers and The Monkey’s Paw is no exception with nice clarity and detail throughout and a solid surround presentation. If you are in the mood for something classic feeling with a nice fresh twist on the zombie genre, check it out. It’s worth taking for a spin.
Available now on Blu-ray and DVD.
