I cannot believe that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is 40 years old. I remember when I was around 7 a local park has an electrical building/shed of some sort and someone had spray painted “Rocky Horror” on it. That was my first glimpse of the film that has become the definition of a cult classic and the longest running theatrical film in history. The Library of Congress even has it preserved it in the National Film Registry. Not bad for a low budget musical horror comedy featuring men in garter belts.
The story is legend. Brad (Barry Bostwick) and his new fiancé Janet (Susan Sarandon) find themselves with a flat tire on a rainy night. They seek refuge in a nearby castle occupied by Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist in the process of unveiling his latest creation: a perfect man to be his mate. But as the night goes on Brad and Janet find there is much more going on at the castle than meets the eye.
Put simply, there are not many films that are this much insane fun as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Every actor is hamming it up to the highest levels, Tim Curry gives a performance for the ages that has become iconic in all of film history, and the music is so widely known it is recognizable even by those who have not seen the movie. It is also a movie that literally has everything. Music, comedy, sex, sci-fi, horror, choreography, drama, tragedy, and creativity. It is a film that can simultaneously entertain, stimulate, offend and amuse. It is impossible to draw comparisons to it and it stands the test of time. It is THE cult classic.
