For any parent with a preteen kid, Spongebob Squarepants is a familiar character. With a high pitched voice that is bound to test an adults patience after about 20 minutes, the cartoon series does have some pretty funny jokes sprinkled throughout that adults can enjoy while kids are watching the frenetic goings on of the residents of Bikini Bottom. While Spongebob has been on the big screen before, it has never been on the scale of this new epic, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
When a fight for the secret recipe for Krabby Patties results in a terrible apocalypse in Bikini Bottom, Spongebob Squarepants and the evil Plankton must team up to create a time machine and go back to get the secret formula before it disappears in an effort to get things at Bikini Bottom back to normal. When it is discovered that a pirate (Antonio Banderas) stole the formula, a time wizard dolphin named Bubbles helps Spongebob and a few friends turn into superheroes and venture into the real world to stop the pirate and return the formula back home.
While much of the first half of The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is just like another episode of the TV series, when things shift gears into the real world and we find our characters in realistic animation and interacting with the real world, the movie really does get to be a lot of fun. The animation, especially in the real world, is very well done and the humor is cranked up for extra laughs, especially when it comes to the jokes thrown in for the grownups. Antonio Banderas really hams it up here and watching him be a pirate with his heavy accent is pretty funny on its own. For the kids this one is a no brainer and they will ultimately watch it over and over again. You may want to only be present the first time though, that voice is only bearable for so long.
