John Carpenter has brought us some of the most memorable horror and sci-fi movies ever. He invented the slasher subgenre with Halloween, made the definitive Elvis movie with Kurt Russell, defined a cult classic with Escape from New York, made the ultimate genre mashing movie with Big Trouble in Little China, one of the most atmospheric horror films every with Prince of Darkness and one of the best sci-fi movies ever with The Thing. While The Thing has been released in many incarnations over the years, including a decent release on Blu-ray, the folks at Shout Factory thought it was time this classic got the full on special edition treatment.
In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man team at a remote research station in Antarctica discovers an alien life form buried in the snow. But when it is thawed out, they discover it has the ability to appear as any other life form and is determined to destroy them all. Now not knowing which among them may be the alien, they must use their wits to survive and find a way to destroy the thing before it spreads to the rest of the planet.
The Thing just may be Carpenter’s most perfect film and that is saying a lot, especially since The Thing is actually a remake. But Carpenter, with the help of screenwriter Bill Lancaster, make The Thing entirely it’s own beast. The pacing is methodical and unforgivingly tense, the cast is phenomenal, and the makeup by Rob Bottin and his team were groundbreaking in 1982 and it still impressive and practically unmatched today. The Thing has a little of everything from humor to tension to downright horror and if anything has actually become better with time. If you haven’t seen it you have to see it right away and if you love it already you have to pick up this new Collectors Edition because it is most certainly the most definitive edition yet.
